What is a UPI QR code and how does it work

A UPI QR code is a QR code that encodes a NPCI URL spec payload (upi://pay?pa=merchant@upi&pn=ShopName&am=100&cu=INR&tn=Bill). Scan with any UPI-enabled app, the payment screen opens pre-filled with your VPA, optional payee name, INR amount and transaction note. The customer reviews the values then authorizes the transfer. The NPCI URL specification is supported across every major UPI app on Android and iOS in India.

Add your logo, brand colors and AI-generated designs so codes match your kirana counter, restaurant table tent, auto-rickshaw workspace, shagun envelope, tuition fee slip, temple donation box, subscription insert, B2B invoice header or NRI-diaspora business card. Print on shop-counter stickers, table tents, workspace cards, gift envelopes, fee reminder slips, donation-box sleeves, packaging inserts, invoice headers or cross-border merchant cards. UPI QRs encode the NPCI URL payload directly into the pixel pattern, so they work across Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, WhatsApp Pay, Amazon Pay, BHIM and every bank UPI app once printed.

Turn Any UPI VPA into a QR Code in 3 Steps

Copy your UPI VPA from any bank app or merchant workspace, brand the code with your logo and AI-generated designs, then download in PNG, SVG, or PDF for shop counters, table tents or invoice headers.

Step 1

Pick your UPI VPA

Copy your UPI VPA such as yourname@oksbi, business@paytm or shop@ybl from your bank UPI app or merchant onboarding workspace. Optionally add payee name, fixed amount in INR and a transaction note per NPCI URL spec.

Step 2

Brand the UPI QR

Add your logo, brand colors and pixel patterns. Pick from 1200+ templates or generate QR Code Art matching your shop counter, restaurant table tent, auto-rickshaw workspace, shagun envelope or invoice header aesthetic.

Step 3

Print and pin

Export in PNG, SVG, or PDF. Print on shop counters, table tents, workspaces, gift envelopes, fee slips, donation boxes, packaging inserts or invoice headers. Test on Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm before production volume.

NPCI URL Spec, AI Branding, Multi-App Compatibility

Encode any UPI VPA into a one-scan payment entry per NPCI URL spec, add your logo for instant brand recognition, distribute print-ready exports across counters, table tents, fee slips or invoice headers.

Frequently Asked Questions About UPI Payment QR Codes

How do I create a UPI QR code?

Posting UPI Payments at Your Counter

A UPI QR code encodes your VPA per the NPCI URL specification so customers scan and pay from any UPI app. Copy your UPI VPA from your bank UPI app or merchant onboarding workspace, then paste it into QR Code AI. Optionally add a payee name, a fixed INR amount and a transaction note. Add your logo, brand colors and AI-generated designs to match your counter or table tent, then download in PNG, SVG or PDF and print at any size for kirana counters, restaurants, auto-rickshaws or B2B invoices.

Can I include a payment amount?

Yes. The NPCI UPI URL specification supports a pre-filled amount via the &am= parameter (e.g. upi://pay?pa=user@bank&am=500 for ₹500). Enter your VPA, payee name and optional amount in QR Code AI; the generator builds the URL and encodes it into the QR. When scanned, every UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, WhatsApp Pay, Amazon Pay, BHIM and every bank UPI app) opens the payment screen with the amount pre-filled, ready to confirm.

Is it free?

Yes. UPI payment QR codes are free on QR Code AI. Generate, customize with your logo, brand colors and AI-designed templates, then download in PNG, SVG or PDF without watermarks. UPI QR codes encode the NPCI payment URL directly into the pixel pattern, so any UPI app opens the payment screen pre-filled with your VPA, no app install required.

Can foreign tourists or NRIs scan my UPI QR code?

UPI is rolling out internationally to UAE, Singapore, France, the UK, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Mauritius, allowing NRIs to pay India-side merchants directly from foreign bank accounts where UPI is supported. Foreign tourists without a UPI-linked workspace cannot scan. Cross-border NRI business cards benefit from a UPI QR alongside a global payment QR for full coverage.

UPI QR vs Pix Payment QR or PayPal QR: which to pick?

UPI QR routes Indian instant-payment via NPCI's open URL specification, opening any UPI-enabled app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM) pre-filled with your VPA. Pix Payment QR routes Brazilian instant-payment via the BACEN BR Code rail and only works with Brazilian banks. PayPal QR routes through PayPal.me on the global card-and-bank platform with currency conversion. Pick UPI QR for India-domestic counters; pair with PayPal QR on NRI-diaspora business cards for cross-border coverage; pair with Pix Payment QR only for merchants serving both India and Brazil.
